Location: The Plzeň Region, Tachov area
Brief history
Mining took place from 1953 until 1993. There were five shafts and 167.4 km of horizontal mine tunnels. The total area of the mine is 7.2 km2. Mining was conducted to a depth of 1,200 m beneath the surface. Extracted was a total of 4,150.7 metric tons of uranium. The ore was processed at the chemical processing plant in Mydlovary.
Type of activity
Underground uranium mining – cut and fill stopping and gradual slicing of walls under an artificial ceiling.
Present-day conditions
Mine dismantled, the underground filled with water, the surface partly reclaimed. Waste sold and processed into crushed stone. Usable structures are prepared for sale or dismantling. Mine water treatment plant in operation with an aim to close it down as soon as the chemical structure of the water stabilizes.
The Environmental Problem and its Solution
Mine water
Outflow of contaminated mine water onto the terrain from the submerging of the mine. Regular pumping out of the water and water treatment; treated water released into the Hamer stream, and long-term monitoring.
Tailings Impoundments
None.
