Location: The South Bohemia Region, Jindřichův Hradec area
Brief history
Mining took place from 1972 until 1990. There were three prospecting shafts, two shafts and 41.6 km of horizontal mine tunnels. The total mining area was 1.4 km2. Mining was conducted to a depth of 600 m beneath the surface. Extracted was a total of 1,339.5 metric tons of uranium. The ore was processed at the chemical processing plant in Mydlovary.
Type of activity
-
Underground uranium mining – cut and fill stopping and gradual slicing.
-
Soda leaching of sliced uranium ore.
Present-day conditions
Mine has been dismantled, the underground filled with water, the surface reclaimed. Usable structures and facilities have been sold. Mine water treatment underway with the aim to end operations as soon as the chemical stability of the water becomes normal.
The Environmental Problem and its Solution
Mine water
Outflow of contaminated mine water from the submerging of the mine. The water level is kept at about 527.5 m to prevent it from flowing into the Karlovský stream (the bottom of Rešlův pond, viz. the ventilation shaft under dump #9). Treated water is released into the Račí stream. Long-term monitoring underway.
