Location: The Moravian-Silesian Region, Opava area.

Brief history

This open pit splittable slate mining site was mined until 1950, and reopened from 1991 to 1992 after geologically prospecting the Hermína adit. Of the planned 840 m of tunneling, only 412.8 m with a cross section of 2.5 x 2.3 m were actually dug and work was stopped. 6,410 metric tons of tailings were extracted. The mine was dug to 28 m beneath the surface. Neither the mining district nor the protected deposit territory has been assessed.

Type of activity

Geological prospecting, the digging of tunnels using mining techniques.

Present-day conditions

  • The mine shaft has been secured in compliance with the mining regulations stipulated in 1992, and the entrance of the adit has been closed off with steel bars.
  • The underground parts of the mine have been cleaned out and the surface facilities have been dismantled with the exception of a pole mounted transformer station.

The Environmental Problem and its Solution

Mine Water

There is no mine water leakage to the surface due to strict geological and hydro-geological techniques used.

Tailings Impoundments

None.

Waste Dumps

Tailings pile removed - used as backfill for the Horní Benešov site rehabilitation.
