Location: The Olomouc Region, Jeseník area
Brief historyThe historic mining took place predominantly in the second half of the 19th century. The modern day mining of iron ore (magnetite - hematite) was initiated in 1960 and finished on 1 April 1968, the balance of its reserves having been mined out. The mountainous forested site was accessed by an adit and three ventilation chimneys. Winzes then sank to a depth of 125 m below the adit’s horizon. A total of 173 kt of ore were extracted. The mining area of 29.54 hectares was shut down in 1973.
Type of activity
-
Underground mining of Fe ore.
- The methods used were walling and upward shear, medium length horizontal drilling, shrinkage stopping, and open chamber mining with long drillings.
- The ore was processed at an on site magnetite weighting material plant for coal refining.
- Waste rock was stored at the dump.
Present-day conditions
The mine was dismantled between 1969 and 1972, the surface reclaimed. Long-term monitoring is in progress.
The Environmental Problem and its Solution
Mine Water
The free flow of mine water through adit piping empties into the Mlýnský stream.
Tailings Impoundments
None.
Waste Dumps
Tailings pile removed - used to backfill the chimneys, the surface reclaimed, cover of naturally seeded tree and grass vegetation.
